The Hidden Cost of Content Moderation in Kenya

Kenyan content moderators are the invisible backbone of global social media — yet they’re paid poverty wages, exposed to trauma, and denied mental health support.

At Project~ETHER, we’ve shone a spotlight on these workers. From Nairobi’s industrial hubs to remote freelancers, thousands review graphic content daily to keep platforms “clean.” But who keeps them safe?

The Reality:

  • No trauma counseling
  • Hourly pay below living wage
  • No job security or benefits
  • High PTSD rates (Siasa Place 2024 survey)

Our Demand:
Big Tech must:

  1. Pay fair wages
  2. Provide mental health support
  3. Offer permanent contracts

This is not charity — it’s human rights.
